| | | | | St. Paul Schools Outdoor Education Program at Belwin | | | | A Walk in the Woods | We had a fabulous day at Belwin. The winter weather was perfect and the
activities were great. The students worked in three different groups;
orienteering, animal signs, and digital photography.
ORIENTEERING Are
you interested in learning how to use a compass? Students were
introduced to basic compass use through such activities as
mini-scavenger hunts and point-to-point orienteering courses. The
students learned how to set and follow a compass bearing, "shoot" a
bearing, measure paces, use landmarks to orient yourself, and walk in
the wilderness without getting lost.
ANIMAL SIGNS Animals
leave many clues behind for us to discover. In this activity the
students used different skills and materials to investigate various
animal signs. To sharpen detective skills, the 5th graders rotated
through various stations in the morning learning to read tracks, scat,
pellets and other traces of animals. In the afternoon, the 5th graders
used their new skills to unravel some of the mysteries on the trails at
Belwin!
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Do you have an eye for a great
picture? Have you always wanted to try out photojournalism? A group of
5th grade students spent the morning learning how to use a digital
camera. They took pictures around Belwin and of our classmates to
document our trip to Belwin. In the afternoon, the students selected
the best pictures to put on an online photo album made just for our
class. Please click on the link to see our pictures.
