Groveland Park Site Council Meeting
February 19, 2008
In attendance: Becky Pedersen, Bruce Finger, Julie Printz,
Craig Roen, Jody Murphy, Tiffany Wortmann, Allison Bittner, Dawn York, Ann
Hobbie, Connie Johnson, Jeff Sambs, Todd Obert, Ken Kozachok, Jackie Hartman,
Deb Van Neste
The meeting commenced at
5:21 p.m. The minutes and agenda were
approved.
Principal’s Report:
- SCIP Process (School Continuous or Comprehensive
Improvement Plan) Currently the SCIP committee consists of staff, the curriculum
coach and ELL members. Becky would
like to have parent involvement as well.
Information is being sent home in the newsletter. The MCAT results help shape the goals
in the SCIP.
- Update on Half Day Kindergarten – we will be the
only school offering this next year.
Students doing the half-day option will spend the morning in a Kindergarten
class (certain number of spots for ½ day) but no transportation home will
be available for these kids next year.
Becky has received many requests for this option. It was suggested that information be
provided on the website regarding the curriculum and what ½ day K is and
isn’t. It would be nice if we
could get a feel for the interest
level during Kindergarten roundup.
- Update on school reassignment areas and Homecroft
– Homecroft will be closing next year. Their neighborhood has been divided into attendance areas for
other schools and Groveland is one
of those schools. There are an
estimated 59 potential students for Groveland, 12 are Language academy students. Many have applied to Highland Elementary. The bilingual program is at
Wellstone. February 21 Homecroft
is having a family event evening to make sure familes are considering all
their neighborhood school options.
Becky and Ann Hobbie are planning to host an informational table
here. We’ve lost students this
year. We have 405 students right
now (413 in October). We’ve also
been assigned as the reassignment school for Highland for the first time
next year. We are the only
reassignment school for Highland Elementary. Groveland is also a reassignment school for Galtier, Hancock
and Monroe.
- 1st grade/2nd grade –
first grade was big this year (25 and 29 students this year). Could we have a split class next
year? Becky prefers to have
separate classrooms for each grade but have more classroom help. 65 kids in 3rd grade this
year will be going from 3 classes down to two 4th grade classes
– those will be big classes! May
need to plan for a third 4th grade class.
- Library recommendation: a retired, licensed school librarian
has done an assessment of our libray and created a report which was passed
out at the meeting.
- School Climate/Behavioral plan: Responsive Classroom training is
expensive and teachers don’t get paid for their time (1 week in the summer). Becky suggested that Groveland could
develop their own plan and also make it a community building effort. There is a behavioral committee that
will work on this.
Celebrate Groveland:
planning is in process – the
committee is looking for silent auction items (teachers are encourage to offer
services – babysitting, etc.)
Student drop-off and pick-up policy: Becky again stressed that parents continue to cross
St. Clair (often between the buses) but not at the crosswalk during pick-up and
drop-off. This is dangerous. Parents need to be reminded to park on
Sargent or cross at the crosswalk for safety reasons. A suggestion was made to have an occasional visit by the St. Paul
Police.
Volunteers for Parent Survey: a
suggestion was to make the survey electronic to make compiling the results
easier. Dawn York volunteered to head a
committee. Jeff Sambs will help make it
electronic. The aim is to have results compiled
for the April Site Council meeting.
Volunteers for Parent Co-chair next year: contact
Craig Roen if you’re interested
Wellness Committee:
Bruce attended a meeting on
this. District is paying more attention
to this now. Bruce is looking for
volunteers to be on a wellness committee.
