November 2009

Dear Groveland Families,

We have had a wonderful fall and want to especially thank our volunteers for their time and energy. These are just some of the ways parents and community members have contributed to student success by volunteering already this year:
•    Parents, university students and community members are tutoring students.
•    Lego League and Spanish Club have started thanks to parent volunteers.
•    Parents are volunteering in the lunchroom and as room parents.
•    The Bookfair, November 9 -13, will be run by volunteers.
•    The Marketing Committee is planning an updated brochure and banners.
•    Parents went with fifth graders to Camp Wijiwagan in Ely, Minnesota for four days in October.
•    Friends of Groveland planned funding for future enrichment activities including visual, creative and dramatic arts for students.

Another way parents have volunteered is by being on the Site Council. Site Council is an advisory group of parents, staff and community members who work together on issues to promote the school and student achievement. Site Council will meet on Tuesday, November 17 at 5:15 p.m. in the library.  Please join us for the November meeting.

Groveland’s enrollment is higher than projected last spring so we have an increase in our budget. We will be hiring an additional teacher to work with all three first grade classes. The teacher will also be spending part of the day working with third grade classes. Both of these primary grade levels have large class sizes so the additional teacher will be able to work with groups of students and provide more individualized instruction.

Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the evenings of November 10 and 12.  Daytime conferences are on November 13. Please contact your child’s teacher if you do not have the conference time and date for your child yet.

Teachers Diane Johnston, Tracy vanNatta and Brenda Leach were awarded EcoLab grants! These teachers purchased books and other materials to support students in the classrooms.

Saint Paul Schools’ 2009 Annual Report is available for you. This year, a limited number of Annual Reports were printed. You may also access the report at www.spps.org.

The Saint Paul Parent Information Fair will be on Saturday, January 10, 2010, from 9:30-2:00 at Saint Paul RiverCentre.  Please encourage parents of preschool children in your neighborhood to attend.

Have a wonderful November and enjoy Thanksgiving with your families!

Sincerely,

Becky Pedersen
