The Week in Review: The letters the class learned this week were S, F and P. One phonics activity the kids enjoyed doing this week was a picture sort. They had 12 pictures to sort out, 6 beginning with the /M/ sound and 6 beginning with the /S/ sound. They needed to say the picture name, and then place it under the correct letter. We will be doing more of these sorts as the year goes on.
During Reader’s Workshop this week, we read a book called “Little Bears.” The book uses repetitive text to help the kids learn a few sight words (these are words that can be identified immediately, not sounded out). We did a variety of activities around the book, including making our own little bears. They are now decorating the window in our room! To help develop writing skills, I like to start by having the children label objects that are familiar to them. We began this activity by looking around the classroom for items, then the kids drew a picture of the object. We worked together as a class to sound out the word using “kid-spelling” (they sounds you hear when you stretch out the word), and I also wrote the word is “grown-up spelling” (the correct spelling of the word). This activity helps the kids understand the idea of listening for the sounds in a word, rather than worrying if they have spelled it correctly.
We took a look at graphs during Math this week, and created a class bar graph of everyone’s birthday. Another Math activity was based on the changing of the calendar to represent a new month.
Homework In this Friday Folder, I have included several bits of “Homework.” There are math Homelinks for Unit 1. I will copy these off for each unit we cover in Math class. There are also some letter practice sheets for the first 6 letters we have learned. These are activities that will fit well with what we have been working on in class. These activities are not requirements, but rather a way for you to help your help with their learning and development. If your child is excited to turn in the homework, feel free to have them do so, I will give it a quick peek and pass it back to them at the end of the week. Thanks!
Very Hungry Caterpillar Performance Our performance is quickly approaching! If you are able to do so, please join us this coming Thursday (10/8) at 3:00 in the cafeteria for our play!
Fundraising Packets The Geckler fundraiser runs through next Wednesday. Please return any orders and money by 10/7. Thanks!
Snack Reminder At the start of the new month, I will put a reminder in the newsletter about monthly snack contributions. About half of the class donated to the snack fund, the others opting to send a snack once a month. If you would like to send the snack in next week, it will help us be ready for snack for October. Thanks!
Have a great weekend!
