Principal's Corner
Dear Families,

Welcome to Groveland! Groveland has long been a popular neighborhood school and it is easy to see why.
Academics have always been important at Groveland and families find many ways to support students in their academic efforts. Parents like the fact that we have many volunteer opportunities and their children feel at home in the school. Whether you live a few blocks or several miles away, you become part of the neighborhood when your children attend Groveland.

If you are a parent/guardian looking for a new school for your child, we know you will want to consider Groveland. We are looking forward to working with you and your child! Call us at 651-293-8760 to set up a tour.

Sincerely,
Becky Pedersen
Principal

Half-Day Kindergarten Option:
We offer a limited number of spaces for students whose families are interested in half-day kindergarten. We offer half-day kindergarten within the regular full day program. Half-day students are in a class with students attending for the full day. Students attending for half the day will attend the morning only and leave at 11:55 a.m. each day.

Why offer a half-day kindergarten program?
Some families felt their children would do well in a half-day kindergarten. We value our families’ feelings on this topic and have chosen to offer the half-day option. The morning curriculum will consist of a literature block (reading, writing) and math.

Do you offer another language?
Our parent group, Friends of Groveland, does fundraising so that we can have a Spanish Amity Intern each year for the school.  In the 2009-10 schoolyear the Amity Intern will be from Spain. She will teach the Spanish culture to students in their classrooms for 3 weeks for approximately 45 minutes per day. She will also offer an optional before school Spanish class. If students chose this option, they meet one day a week at 8:00-8:45 AM.

Do you have an art specialist?
We believe it is important to allow many art enrichment activities for the students. Although we do not have an art specialist we do offer many art options for students. Each year we have a partnership with Northern Clay. Students make tiles as one of their projects. You can see many of the tiles on the walls at Groveland. In addition, we have been able to provide opportunities for students to be involved with Stepping Stones Theatre, Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre, Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  Some parent volunteers work in the classrooms teaching students about a particular artist in a program called, "Art Adventures."

What specialists do you have?
Groveland has a specialist in each of these areas: music, science and physical education.  Students in grades K-6 go to a specialist class for 50 minutes a day in a three week rotation.  For example, a student will have gym for a week, then music, then science and begin the rotation over again. Each of the specialists have state and national standards that they use for instruction.
