| May's Newsletter Important Dates: 5-1 Children’s Museum 5-9 Last library visit 5-20 Site Council meeting 5-26 Memorial Day 5-29 Family Picnic (evening) 5-30 (?) tentative date for Poetry Café Curriculum Overview: Writer’s Workshop: We are pencils deep in our poetry writing. Students are enjoying writing and sharing their poems. Check the May Groveland newsletter or our web page for our poems on the “ordinary.” The students are planning on creating a Poetry Café – an invitation coming later in the month. Reader’s Workshop: Many students have completed their fairy tales. They will share them with Kindergartners before bringing them home. Students will continue working on prefixes, various spelling patterns, similes & metaphors, and comprehension. They will be writing their own story summaries and determining main idea with supporting details. Everyday Math: We started Unit 11 – Whole-Number Operations. Students are introduced to “trade-first” subtraction algorithm. Students will also solve multiplication & division number stories. They will learn to use a product table and write fact families for multiplication/division. My goal is to get through both chapters 11 & 12 by the end of the year. Social Studies: During the week of May 12th, there will be a presenter from Stepping Stone Theater coming and working with the students. Using the folk tale, Stone Soup, students will participate in a number of “drama” activities. We are finishing our Community unit and our last two units will be “Nutrition” and “Risk Watch.” | ||||
