Site Council Meeting

May 1, 2007

In attendance:  Craig Roen, Julie Printz, Jody Murphy, Allison Bittner, Sue King, Lori Seastrand, Jeremy Lish, Lisa Keitel, Anneke Krall, Valerie O’Keefe, Kris Hageman, Deb Van Neste, Alice Lightner Johnson, Cleva Jobe, Heather Sundberg, Jeff Sambs, Katie Parke-, Reimer, Karen Benson, Jessica Pilhstrom, Kari Brenan, Cindy Dawson, Dawn York, Linda Eggert, Tracy Van Natta, Todd O’Bert

Meeting commenced at 5:17

Budget Report:  Budget projection shows $42,902 less for next year.  Our enrollment projection is 402 students.  The Language Academy Plus has been approved for next year and there is a projection of around  54 students possible in that program (more likely 35 students that will come with this).  If we had 437 students we’d make up for the shortfall.

We will take the ½ day Kindergarten and make it a full day.  Parents will still have an option to do only half day Kindergarten because all of the curriculum covering the standards will be done from 9:10-11:55.  They will eliminate the noontime bus.  The half-time kids will be spread out through all three classes and go home at 11:55.  Most of the LA+ kids will be in the intermediate grades.  Cleva has requested one full time staff addition.  We may come up short for supplies next year requiring money from Friends or donations from parents.

SCIP:  The SCIP is due on May 4.  The information and plans are driven by MCA scores which aren’t given back to us until the end of August.  We have until November 1st to adjust the SCIP based on the scores we receive.  The SCIP was first presented to Site Council on May 1.  Site Council was not given an advance copy to review and comment upon.

It was moved to submit the SCIP by Friday, May 4, which is the deadline set by the District, with proviso that it has not been approved by Site Council and Site Council will table the discussion until the fall.  Motion was seconded and passed.

It was noted that no parents participated in the preparation of the SCIP.  It was also noted that the SCIP committee has always in the past included parents and that in the future parent participation ought to be required.  Cleva said that she had invited parents to participate but no one responded to that invitation.

Cleva requested that everyone read the SCIP after the meeting and give feedback later.

Principal Search:  Dr. Jobe is retiring next fall requiring Groveland to conduct a new principal search.  We should limit the interview committee to 10.  Craig has suggested we go to 12 (seven staff, five parents).  There was discussion and disagreement about this.  Craig tabled the discussion.

Staff participating:  7 possible staff members and 2 alternates – including representatives from primary, secondary, Kindergarten, specialists, special ed (Jody will speak on their behalf) and Sue King

Parents:  Valerie O’Keefe, Jessica Pilhstrom, Katie Parke, Anneke Krall, Emmett Donnelly

Kenyatta Carter (HR), Joe Munnich (community relations) joined us as co-facilitators of this process.  They will be here with each meeting involving this process.

They serve as resources and to ensure a fair and legal process.  They don’t actually make any decisions about the principal selection.

Process:

  1. Information gathering – allows staff and parents to provide input about what they want in a principal.  (4/26-5/3)
  2. Synthesize and Prioritize – takes this info and creates job description (4/26-5/3)
  3. Identifying Candidates (5/5-5/9) and drafting interview questions (5/4-5/11) – must keep information confidential (names of candidates and the interview questions).
  4. Interviews held (5/16, 5/17) – interviewing 5-8 candidates
  5. Selecting finalists by 5/18, 4:30 p.m. – three will be selected
  6. Superintendent’s announcement/School Board Approval (June, 2007)

Qualifications:  must be current SPPS tenured Principal or Leadership Institute Fellow or

Master’s Degree and Prinicpal outside of SPPS district.

HR screens for minimum qualifications.  Superintendent also then screens those using further criteria.  HR checks references and receives letters of recommendations but these are not shared with committee.

Key attributes desired in the new principal were established by the group, which are intended to guide the interview committee in its consideration of candidates.  Also, a series of interview questions were formulated.  Craig and Jody will write them up and distribute them to the group by email before the May 8 Site Council meeting.

The next Site Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at 5:15.
